10 Sebring SCCA National Race Report

Northbrook, IL (January 12, 2010) Trying to beat the winter blues and get a kick start on the GT2 National Championship title defense, Fall-Line Motorsports drivers Mark Boden, David and Cooper MacNeil, along with Team Manager Rob May, took assault on the historic Sebring International Raceway for the SCCA SafeRacer National Racing Series Double National race.

10 Sebring

This was the first time in 10 years since David MacNeil raced at Sebring, with his last trip resulting in a 2nd place in the GT2 class at the 1999 12 Hours of Sebring, and the first time for Cooper MacNeil, and defending SCCA National Runoffs Champion Mark Boden at the historic track. Sebring is the home track for Rob May. He has been racing there for about 15 years.

With Rob’s experience, he led David and Cooper in lead-follow sessions during Friday’s practice in Group 5 to get acclimated to the track.  Rob raced the #45 Fall-Line Porsche in the STO class, Cooper raced the #76 WeatherTech BMW in the T2 class, and David ran his first race in the #79 STO WeatherTech Ferrari 430 Challenge car.  The two were joined on Saturday by Mark Boden in the #86 Fall-Line Porsche in the GT2 class.  With it being his first time at Sebring, Mark decided to go out on the wet Saturday Group 5 qualifying session, but he was the only one to take advantage of the session.

At the start of Saturday’s Group 5 race, it was still wet, but also add to the equation that the nation, including Florida, was in a cold snap.  This, however, didn’t deter the team who is used to their first race being wet and cold.  Rob May took the overall win in Group 5, and in the STO class; Boden finished 2nd overall, 1st in the GT2 class; David was 2nd in STO in his first race in the Ferrari 430 Challenge, and Cooper finished 3rd in the T2 class.

In Sunday’s qualifying session, Mark and Rob were doing lead-follow with David and Cooper, helping Mark qualify on the pole for GT2 by over 2 seconds.  In the race, Mark won the GT2 class, sweeping the weekend; Rob finished 4th in STO; David finished 6th in STO; and Cooper achieved his first SafeRacer National Racing Series win in the T2 class.  Not only did Cooper achieve this great feat, but he also set a new track record in T2 with a lap time of 2:27.669.  All in all, Fall-Line had a great showing racing against people they have never raced before and showed that they are a force to be reckoned with.  Special thanks go out to the Fall-Line crew for working together and getting the STO Porsche back together for a competitive effort.
