Fall-Line Motorsports finishes 1 and 2 in SCCA Central Division Season

After a season which had the Fall-Line SCCA T2 team travel across the country, to race at a track they had never seen, a broken arm in a non-racing incident, & extremely close competition amongst themselves and other competitors, Steve Jenkins and Mark Boden have finished 1 and 2 in the Central Division’s T2 Class.

The season started out with the SCCA Hauler being loaded and sent to Phoenix AZ for a Double National Race at Firebird International Raceway. Both Steve and Mark went along with new team member David MacNeil. David is just getting back into racing after a hiatus in which he spent his time growing his business, and learning to fly jets!!! In a freak accident after the Friday practice, Mark broke his arm badly while starting the 4 wheel pit vehicle with the pull starter. Amazingly, Mark showed up at the track on Saturday, with a cast on his arm, and still raced to a 4th place finish! Steve had pole position (setting a new track record), and finished 2nd. David MacNeil finished 5th in just his first race in 5 years. Sunday was another eventful day with Mark electing not to qualify due to pain in his arm, Steve had the pole again, but his clutch went in the 2nd lap of qualifying. Mark was a real team player, and gave Steve his car to run in the race. Steve started last on the grid due the the car swap, and Mark drove Steve’s car starting from pit lane, and leaving the car in 3rd gear for the entire race. Steve ended up finishing in 3rd place, with David in 4th, and Mark in 7th. “ I owe a lot to Mark both on and off the track” commented Steve, “ he has done so much for me to get going in racing, and he continues to be completely selfless with a move like the one he made in AZ letting me drive his car”.

Next up was a National at Blackhawk Farms in Rockton, IL, and a National at Daytona, in FL. Mark and Steve went to Blackhawk, along with Dick Roberts, while on the same weekend, David went to Daytona to race against 4 other Fall-Line Built T2 cars. At Blackhawk, qualifying had Steve on the pole followed very closely by Mark, and Dick was in 3rd. When the green flag dropped, it was a race to turn one for Mark and Steve, “Steve and I were so close all weekend, that we both knew if we could make it through turn one in the lead, it would be tough for the other to get past unless we made a mistake” said Mark. When all was said and done, The 3 Fall-Line cars finished 1, 2, and 3 with Dick Roberts in 3rd, just as they qualified. Mark and Steve were both more that .5 seconds faster than the previous lap record, but Mark edged Steve by .013 seconds to hold onto his Blackhawk track record, one he has held for several years. In Daytona the results were similar, with the BGB Motorsports T2 M3 driven by John Tecce finishing 1st, The Palm Coast Ford Mustang GT driven by Carlos Lira finishing 2nd, and the Weather-Tech / Fall-Line BMW M3 driven by David MacNeil finishing 3rd. All of these T2 Cars along with 2 other Mustangs entered in the Daytona Race were built by Fall-Line Motorsports.

The Fall-Line team missed the 2nd National at Blackhawk due to a conflict with the Grand-Am Schedule, so the next race was The June Sprints at Road America. This race presented a logistical issue as the first 2 qualifying sessions were on Saturday, and Mark and Steve were in OH for a Grand-Am race. “we flew out of OH on Sat night after our GA race, and made the last qualifying session on Sunday morning, we had to make those laps count, as they were all we had” said Steve who qualified 4th with David in 6th and Mark in 7th, and Dick in 8th.  The results were similar, with Steve 4th, Mark 5th, and David 6th, and Dick in 7th.

Next up was the National at Fall-Line’s home track, the Autobahn Country Club, in Joliet, IL.  This Race saw Steve start 2nd, Dick start 4th, and Mark once again elected to start from the back due to a conflict on Saturday that kept him from qualifying. Steve took the lead on the 4th lap and lead until the last turn of lap 22 (the last lap). Mark worked his way through the pack quickly, and was on Steve’s bumper by lap 8! The two had a great nose to tail race for 14 laps, before Mark passed Steve in the last turn of the last lap to take the win. “Mark was all over me for what seemed like forever. He backed off toward the end of the last lap, and I choked. He was faster that I was, but I thought I had him beat. Oh well, if I have to lose I don’t mind losing to him!” said Steve. Dick came in 5th.

The final race in the Cen-Div was the Cat Nationals back at Road America. Steve knew all he had to do was finish close to Mark in this race to win the division, but that didn’t keep him from getting the pole, and do everything he could to win. Mark qualified 3rd, with David, and Dick close behind. Once again, Mark had a great start and was right on Steves tail for 3 laps before getting by him in turn 13. The 2 then pulled away from the field to once again finish 1-2 with Mark again getting the honors. David finished a strong 4th after a race long battle with the 3rd place finisher, and Dick was in 5th.

Steve won the division by 7 points, 52 to 45 over Mark, in his Rookie year of SCCA racing. “I probably wouldn’t have won the division if it weren’t for Mark letting me drive his car in that 2nd race in AZ” said Steve “ It was such a blast to race close with Mark this year, we are great friends, and very very close competitors, we had some great fun with the smack talking, and I’m sure that wont ever stop”
