Fall-Line Motorsports has strong showing in Koni Challenge Opener
1st outing for brand new car had top ten in sights!

Daytona Beach, FL (January 24, 2009)- Debuting their brand new 2008 BMW M3 race car, Fall-Line Motorsports of Northbrook, IL was running strong when the most unfortunate of things happened.

Building a brand new car from scratch, that no one has ever turned a race lap in, is not for the faint of heart. Fall-Line took a brand new 2008 model year car, stripped it to a bare chassis, and rebuilt it to the rules of Grand-Am Koni Sports Car Challenge. The obstacles were seemingly never ending, and with only hours to spare before the truck had to leave for the first race of the season (Fresh from Florida 200), a 3 hour affair at the Daytona International Speedway, the car fired for the first time. The # 28 Fall-Line Motorsports BMW is sponsored by HRE Performance Wheels, DINAN, Original BMW Parts, Sparco, and Laurel BMW of Westmont (Illinois).

With basically no time in the car, driver Mark Boden (Winnetka, IL) qualified the car in a strong 19th position for the 34 car GS Class field, and 65 car total field. “This new car is still a bit of a handful to drive, but I went out there and did what I could with it, we are making changes each session, and it gets better and better each time” said Boden.

Moving smartly up in the first 45 minutes, Boden had the car in 10th position when the caution flag flew. Optimizing fuel strategy, the call was made to pit Boden for fuel tires, and a driver change. The pit stop was flawless, but the drivers change was not. “The handle for the adjuster on the seat slider came off, and the seat was way too far back” said co-driver Steve Jenkins (Glenview, IL), “the crew was able to move it up a notch or two, and throw a wadded up jacket behind my back, I could barely reach the pedals, but it was ok, I guess”.

With 2 hours and 15 minutes left to go, Jenkins drove consistent strong laps, and moved through the field. Pitting once more under yellow for tires and fuel, fuel conservation was at a premium. “I had to coast off the banking under cautions to save fuel, the guys were constantly reminding me to save fuel where I could, or we wouldn’t make it to the end” commented Jenkins.

With less than 5 minutes to remain in the race, Jenkins was running a strong 9th place, with the leaders in sight, when an overzealous rookie made a bad decision behind him. A Mustang that Jenkins had passed a few laps earlier got into the back of him in the bus stop, and spun him into the wall. “I’m not sure what to think, I doubt it was on purpose, but the hit was so hard, it seems he had to of had time to avoid it” said a woozy Jenkins, “I was spun so hard I couldn’t begin to catch it, then the hit on the wall nearly knocked me out. It’s a shame for a lot of people. The race at the front was incredible, I could see it happening. Mark and I were excited about starting the season with a strong top 10 finish in a new car, and then this, and for what, I think he still finished 10th… I don’t get it!”

An unfortunate finish to what could have been an unbelievable start to the 2009 season, has soured, but not discouraged the Fall-Line team. Plans are underway to repair the extensive damage, and to construct a second new car.
